Using the GPS logger to record tracks and upload them to the server

GPS logger is a simple to use, but useful app for Android smartphones that does what its name says. It logs your GPS tracks. The server has been set up to recieve tracks from the phone by uploading them using SFTP.

Action

1. Install GPS logger using the Google play store.
2. Open the App
3. Click on the icon with three bars showing on the top right of the screen

Action: Set up the SFTP transfer

1. Scroll down to SFTP
2. Open the window to fill in details
3. Type r.bournemouth.ac.uk in the “Hostname or IP” section
4. Type 83 in the Port sectiom
5. Type \upload in the folder section
6. Type les in the username section
7. Type les_2017 in the password section
8. Scroll to the bottom and validate the host key and test the output. You should see the key and get a message that test is successful.

Action: Set the file format to GPX and create a new unique file for each log

1. Click on the icon at the top left again.
2. Choose Logging details
3. Make sure that “Log to GPX” is active (blue button showing)
4. Scroll down to “New File Creation”
5. Click on it and choose “Every time I start”
6. Scroll down to “Prefix the device and serisl number to the file name”
7. Activate this

Action: Set the performance options

1. Click on the icon on the top left
2. Scroll to Logging interval and click.
3. Choose a time between intervals (for example 5 seconds)
4. Scroll down to “Keep GPS on between fixes”. Activate this

Action: Log a track then choose sftp upload option

1. Start logging.
2. Stop logging.
3. Find the upload button (third from right at the bottom of the screen, a bar with an up arrow)
4. Click the button and select SFTP
5. Choose a file (or files) to upload
6. Press OK. The files are now on the server.
